Round 1 v North Adelaide
It was great to see the girls kick off season 2 of the SANFL Womens competition with a good 24-point win against North Adelaide. Despite both teams fielding significantly different squads to last year, the strong competitiveness built up between both teams last year, was clearly evident again in the replay of the Grand Final.
Despite having a longer lead in time this season in comparison to last, there was still very much an unknown of how our group would come together. With a high turnover of players within our squad, the preseason was spent re-building our game again & getting a strong fitness base underneath us.
Despite some initial nerves, as the game went on we were pleased to see the group beginning to become more familiar with each & we could see our Norwood brand of football start to come together. Already in season 2 you can see the skill & athleticism has improved in both teams as the women’s game continues to grow & improve in standard.
Based on the North Adelaide performance & squad, we are expecting they will again be a major player in the later stage of the season so to get a good win over them early on in the season is very pleasing.
Like majority of our performances from last year, we are very even team across the field. Marijana Rajcic was a welcome addition back from the Crows and put in a strong performance across half back. Others who were strong contributors throughout the game were: Kate Fenton and Monique Hollick across Half forward, Alannah Browne & Ebony O’Dea through the midfield & Whitney Benson was rock solid down back.
Our Round 1 team featured 10 players who as yet had not worn the famous Norwood Guernsey & all 10 have quickly became familiar with the Norwood Tradition, Culture & Expectations. Congratulations to Rhiannon Busch, Nicole Campbell, Jo Hill, Alannah Browne, Monique Hollick, Kate Fenton, Rhianna Peate, Stana Zecevic, Adele Gibson andTania Franklin on your first games for the club. We look forward to seeing you all in our club colours for many games to come.
Thank you to the great crowd & support we received on Saturday, I know the girls loved it & the crowd support certainly provided them that extra boost at the contest. We look forward to having the continued great support this week against Westies at Hickinbotham Oval. It will be a great challenge for our group on such a large ground, I know our girls can’t wait.
