Norwood U18s fall short

Norwood has fallen agonizingly short of its first victory of the U18 season, going down to Glenelg by just three points at Norwood Oval on Saturday. 

In their first home game of the season, the Redlegs trailed by 23 points at three quarter time, before coming storming home with four last quarter goals to one.

Glenelg held onto a 11.7-73 to 10.10-70 win.

After taking the football world by storm with his mark of the year contender last week, Ned Bowman backed up with three goals from 16 disposals.

Eamonn Cronin also kicked three goals from 17 disposals, while Jacob Newton had 27 disposals, four clearances and a goal, and Jim Kelly 24 disposals and six clearances.

Norwood started the better of the two sides, kicking four goals to two in the opening term.

The Redlegs had plenty of chances to build on its 13-point quarter time lead, but kicked 1.5 for the quarter to Glenelg’s 4.5, which saw the Tigers take a five-point lead into half time.

The first 10 minutes of the second half went score-less, but Glenelg found a way through and kicked four of the next five goals to go in 23-point leaders at the final break.

Cronin, Bowman and Newton kicked goals in the first 11 minutes of the final quarter to get the margin back to five points, before Archer Rouvray kicked a settler for Glenelg.

Norwood threatened the goals late, but managed just 1.2 in the final minutes, including a Bowman goal in the final minute of the game. The ball went back to the centre with 40 seconds to play, but Glenelg managed the clearance and to cling onto victory.

Glenelg proved too strong for Norwood in the U16 on Saturday, claiming a 56-point win over the Redlegs at Norwood Oval.

The Tigers set the tone early with four goals to one in the first term to lead by 24 at the first break.

Norwood kicked the first of the second term through co-captain Blake Jones, but Glenelg went on to kick the next four goals of the contest to put a 44-point buffer on the Redlegs.

Norwood’s Jarrah Reidy kicked the first of his three goals just before half time, but it was a 9.9 to 3.2 game at the main break.

The Tigers put the result beyond doubt early in the third quarter, with three quick goals to make it a match-high 60-point margin by the seven-minute mark of the third term.

Norwood showed some spirit before the final break with three quick goals of their own through Reidy (twice) and Dylan Bielak.

Glenelg kicked four goals to two in the final quarter to run out 17.11-113 to 8.9-57 winners.

Bielak and Reidy finished with three goals apiece, while Kai Ivins was best on ground with 23 disposals, eight clearances and a goal. Charlie Best had 22 disposals, 12 tackles and seven clearances.
