North too strong for Norwood Juniors

Norwood’s U18s went down by 19 points against the third placed North Adelaide on Saturday at Norwood Oval. 

It’s the second time Norwood has taken on the Roosters in 2024, with North also claiming a five-point Round 1 victory over the Redlegs.

Ned Bowman continues to be a shining light for Norwood, kicking another three goals on Saturday to take his season tally to 14, which is second on the U18s League goal kicking table behind Sturt’s Ned Atkinson.

Jacob Newton also booted three goals from his 19 disposals, along with seven clearances and three tackles.

Jake Hill and Darcy Speyer also had 19 disposals, while ruckman James van Wyk was best on ground with 16 disposals, 31 hitouts and three tackles.

The first quarter went goal for goal, and Norwood was lucky the visitors didn’t kick straight with North going into quarter time with a 3.5-23 to 2.2-14 lead.

The Roosters controlled the second quarter, kicking 3.3 to Norwood’s 0.2 to take a 28-point lead into the main break.

Norwood responded with the first two goals of the third term through Newton and Bowman to return the margin to a manageable 15 points, but the Roosters kicked back with two goals of their own.

Two early goals to the Roosters to start the fourth term got the margin out to a match-high 36 points, but Norwood ensured the game didn’t blow out and found four of the last five goals to finish 19 points in arrears.

It was another challenging day for Norwood’s U16s as North Adelaide ran away with a 98-point win at Norwood Oval on Saturday.

The Redlegs competed well early in the contest and trailed by 12 points at quarter time.

Norwood returned from quarter time with a spark and booted the first two goals of the second quarter through Tom Gribben and co-captain Blake Jones to get the margin back to one point.

North Adelaide turned the screws and kicked six unanswered goals to get the game out to 38 points just before half time. Callum Myles converted a set shot just before the half time siren to make it 31 points at the main break.

After half time it was all North Adelaide, with the visitors slamming home 13 goals to two to run out 23.8-146 to 7.6-48 winners.

Dylan Bielak and Nicholas Reid both kicked two goals for Norwood, while Charlie Best was the Redlegs leading ball winner with 18 disposals.
