Arkun’s career best day leads the way

Norwood made a big statement on Saturday, knocking off the previously undefeated Woodville-West Torrens by 11 points at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval.

The Redlegs were impressive from the first bounce, led by a career best four-goal effort from Sophie Arkun, in the 6.7-43 to 5.2-32 win.

Norwood held the Eagles scoreless in the opening term, as Coby Morgan and Nicola Burns goaled for the Redlegs to set up a 16-point quarter time lead.

The response was always coming from the Eagles, who had been the benchmark all season, and Matthews got the home side going with a goal mid-way through the second quarter.

At half time it was 2.7-19 to 1.0-6.

Arkun decided it was the perfect moment to inflict herself on the contest, and after booting just one goal in her first 32 SANFL Women’s matches, finished her 33rd game with five career goals to her name.

She booted two goals in the third quarter to make it a 24-point margin, before the Eagles again responded. It was another two Arkun goals in the final quarter that sealed victory, before O’Neill booted a late one for the Eagles to bring the final margin 11 points.

Arkun finished with four goals from 20 disposals, booting all of the Redlegs majors after quarter time.

Jade Halfpenny was everywhere once again, with 27 disposals and eight clearances, while teenager Mia Wood had her best League game with 25 disposals and six clearances.

Morgan has been a consistent performer this season, and found 23 disposals and a goal.

After defeating the two top teams in the past fortnight, the Redlegs sit third with a 6-3 record, and take on the last placed Glenelg on Saturday evening.
