Eagles run away from Norwood Juniors

Norwood’s U18s would be disappointed with a last quarter fade-out against Woodville-West Torrens at Norwood Oval on Saturday, with the Eagles running away with a 31-point win.

The Redlegs were just six points down early in the last quarter, before the visitors slammed home the last four goals of the match to run out 9.16-70 to 5.9-39 winners and leaving Norwood with just one win to its name.

The end scoreline didn’t reflect the nature of the game as the lead changed hands seven times throughout the first three quarters.

Scores were level at quarter time, before Norwood hit the front during the second term when Micah Kretschmer snapped a goal from a forward 50m stoppage.

Jamie Russell-Swanson kicked a quick answering goal for Woodville-West Torrens which helped the visitors to a three-point half time lead.

Redlegs midfielder Darcy Speyer kicked a cracking goal from outside 50m one minute into the second half to regain the lead, but the Eagles again made the quick response with two goals before three quarter time.

The Redlegs turned for home just 11 points in arrears of the Eagles, and when Ethan Pugsley nailed a running goal the home side came within six points.

However, it all turned on its head when Woodville-West Torrens found six of the last seven scores of the match, returning 4.3, to take the game out of Norwood’s grasp.

Jeff Rozenbilds had 25 disposals and three clearances, while captain Luke Scott had a good day with 22 disposals.

2023 U16 Best and Fairest Speyer finished with 21 disposals, four clearances and a goal.

Norwood will play host to North Adelaide in Round 8 this Saturday at Norwood Oval.

Rupert Pearce nailed a set shot goal for Norwood later in the term, but the Eagles went into the main break with an 11-point lead, 5.4-34 to 3.5-23.

Woodville-West Torrens threatened to take the game away early in the third quarter with back to back goals, but Norwood levelled the quarter with responding goals to Mason Tambe and B. Jones to ensure Norwood remained just 10 points down at the 12-minute mark of the third quarter.

The Eagles kicked away again late in the term to take a 30-point lead into the last break.

Thomas Gribben gave Norwood a spark in the first minute of the final quarter, nailing a long set shot goal, before the Eagles booted the last three goals of the game to stretch away to a 41-point win.
