Glenelg outlasted Norwood in an arm wrestle at Coopers Stadium on Saturday afternoon, claiming a 16-point Round 11 win.
The margin never stretched past 17 points all game, and it was just one point the difference at three quarter time. But, the Tigers were cleaner and did the simple things better when it mattered, kicking three goals to one in the last term to secure an 11.9-75 to 9.5-59 win.
On a day where the Eagles (124 points) and North Adelaide (84 points) were destroyed by Sturt and Adelaide respectively, and Port beaten by South, a Redlegs win would have moved them to sixth on the ladder and two wins outside the top five.
But, it wasn’t to be as the Tigers kicked four of the last five goals to take out its eighth win of the season.
Early in the day, the Redlegs did well to contain a fast-starting Glenelg side which kicked five first quarter goals in a rampaging, free-flowing opening, keeping within two goals at quarter time – 5.2-32 to 3.2-20.
Both coaches reigned their sides in at quarter time, and the remainder of the game became a tough, contested battle.
Norwood held Glenelg to one goal in the second term and edged its way in front in the third quarter after kicking four straight goals.
The reigning premiers went back to what they do best, controlling the ball and eventually got the game back on their terms late in the third quarter with late goals to captain Liam McBean.
Glenelg led 8.5-53 to 8.4-52 at the three quarter time break, and the dangerous Lachie Hosie found and early goal from close range to put it out to seven points.
The Tigers were on top and threatened to take the game away, but kicked three consecutive behinds to limp the margin out to 10 points.
Norwood was on the ropes, but Jackson Callow stepped up with a timely goal to kick the door back open.
This door was slammed pretty quickly with back to back goals through Will Chandler and McBean’s fourth to seal the win at 16 points.
Callow finished with four goals from set shots, while Tristan Binder and Jacob Kennerley booted two each.
Lowe kicked the other goal, while also collecting 17 disposals and winning eight clearances.
Billy Cootee was Norwood’s leading ball winner with 21 touches and eight tackles, while Nik Rokahr had 20 disposals and Matt Ling 19.
Glenelg’s James Bell threatened to break the game open early with nine disposals in the opening term, but finished with 22 touches and 10 clearances.
Always a problem for Norwood, McBean finished with four goals and Hosie two.
The Redlegs haven’t been able to string two wins together this season, as their last six matches going win-loss-win-loss-win-loss, with their narrow losses being 11 points to Centrals, four points to Sturt and now 16 points to Glenelg.
Norwood head to Alberton Oval next Sunday to take on Port Adelaide, hoping it can get back on the winners list.

Norwood’s Reserves were no match for the second placed Glenelg at Coopers Stadium on Saturday, going down by 46 points.
The Tigers booted five unanswered goals in the opening 20 minutes of the game and never looked back, leading by 31 points at the first break and skipping away to a 16.7-103 to 8.9-57 victory.
The Redlegs managed one goal for the first half, but were much more competitive after half time, kicking seven goals each to ensure the 48-point half time deficit didn’t blow out.
Marco D’Annunzio was Norwood’s best, winning 30 hitouts in the ruck to give his midfielders first use, which helped the Redlegs win clearances 31-29.
Norwood had 31-more disposals, but Glenelg was able to control the ball when it had it in possession, leading marks 92-67 and going inside 50m seven-more times. The Redlegs were under pressure, with the Tigers laying 67 tackles to 45.
Daniel Gauci had 26 disposals for Norwood, six clearances and seven tackles, while Ben Simpson had 21 touches and 10 clearances in his second game back from injury.
Three Norwood players kicked two goals, Jack Hodges, Liam Ling and U18 Will Prescott.
