The Norwood Football Club will be returning to Port Lincoln on Saturday, May 13 for the annual Eyre Peninsula SANFL match against West Adelaide.
The Round 6 match will take place at Centenary Oval, with both teams competing for The Teakle Cup – thanks to naming rights and platinum partner Peter Teakle Wines.
As part of this year’s event a range of experiences will taking place across a busy week, including:
Norwood won last year’s inaugural Teakle Cup 19.13-127 to 9.5-59, which was held over the Anzac Day weekend with more than 2500 people in attendance.
Norwood co-captain and Eyre Peninsula product Jacob Kennerley said it was special to play in his home region, while representing the Redlegs. Kennerley is one of 11 current Norwood players on the senior men’s list who hail form the EP – Ben Jarvis, Tristan Binder, Cameron Taheny, Jayden Gale, Harvey Pedler, Macaulay Glover, Cameron Ball, Josh Bradford, Dannen Blacker and Isaiah Wilksch.
“It meant a lot playing a game at home on the EP in 2022 and I look forward to playing again in 2023,” Kennerley said.
“It will be again an amazing feeling running out in front of people that I grew up with and those who supported me throughout juniors.
“The EP community shows a real sense of care and support to everyone. Whether you grew up there, whether you are new to the area or are just passing through. There’s a genuine sense of pride about where each person comes from and their local town. A big thankyou to Peter Teakle Wines and all of the other sponsors for getting behind this game.
“I’m super excited to get back home and play again in front of friends and family. I know we will all feel well supported back there and I hope we can put on a show for all those that make the effort to come and watch.”
Ben Teakle, Managing Director of Peter Teakle Wines said the Teakle Cup was an important event on the calendar in Port Lincoln.
“We are thrilled to have partnered with Norwood Football Club and to once again be presenting the Teakle Cup here in Port Lincoln,” he said.
“Football is such an integral part of life here in the Eyre Peninsula and it was great to see the community come together and cheer on local talent at last year’s game.
“We hope the Teakle Cup will continue to be a highlight annual event that will unite the Port Lincoln community and attract the wider South Australian community to this beautiful part of our state.”
Since aligning with the Eyre Peninsula Region in 2015 as the club’s recruiting zone, the Norwood Football Club has committed to investing in the region both from a football development and a commercial perspective.
The Eyre Peninsula has been a very important recruitment zone for our footy club with 10 players currently on our senior list that have come from the region. At the same time five players originating from the Eyre Peninsula have been drafted from Norwood to AFL clubs.
We are immensely proud of our connection with the region and look forward to growing it year on year through partnerships with local business like Peter Teakle Wines and continued investment in the region.
Playing one of our SANFL home matches in Port Lincoln is at the forefront of that and to do so we need the support of local government, local football leagues, tourism operators and commercial organisations.
Close to 1000 players, coaches, staff, supporters, sponsors and SANFL delegates made the trip to attend the inaugural match on the Eyre Peninsula in 2022, spending considerable time in Port Lincoln and the broader region, investing in the local economy. With an average spend of $750 per visitor on accommodations, tourism, hospitality, and retail, this represents an injection of $750,000 into the local economy on an annual basis.
There are numerous benefits in bringing a game of SANFL football to the Eyre Peninsula each year, both from a commercial and football point of view. Most importantly it has a positive impact on the local community and demonstrates our commitment as a football club to continue to work with local businesses, invest in the economy and promote the region to our extensive football supporter base.
Currently we are committed to 2023 and 2024 and have significant support from local and Adelaide based business –
We are seeking as much support as possible to grow this annual event and involve as much of the Eyre Peninsula community as possible. Our objectives include:
Norwood Football Club is also committed to growing our investment back into the EP region. We are currently doing the following:
The Norwood Football Club is committed to growing The Teakle Cup event in partnership with the government and business across the Eyre Peninsula region, both are vital in supporting our ability to host this event in the EP region annually.
