“We are thrilled to partner with such an iconic local business and success story in Peter Teakle Wines to help bring the game to Pt Lincoln for all the EP community to look forward to and enjoy.
“The Teakle Cup, will be a perpetual trophy awarded to the winning side each year and without the support of Peter Teakle Wines and other local businesses it just wouldn’t be possible to bring an SANFL game for premiership points to the EP.”
Teak Corp Managing Director Ben Teakle says that everyone at Peter Teakle Wines is absolutely thrilled to be involved in bringing the SANFL game to the Eyre Peninsula and highlighting the rich history of quality footballers coming from the EP region.
“We are passionate about supporting local footy and look forward to working with the Norwood Football Club to make this a great event for many years to come,” Teakle said.
Norwood Football Club CEO, James Fantasia also mentioned the importance of investing back into the EP community, which was a key driver in securing the clash in Port Lincoln.
“The whole of the EP community has been so supportive of our football club and we are really focused on investing back into the community,” Fantasia said.
“A significant part of that commitment is bringing a Norwood home game to the EP every year, however, that requires significant time, resources, and money.
“To have the support of Peter Teakle Wines and other local businesses is absolutely critical and very much appreciated.”
The Teakle Cup will be an annual event that the whole EP community can look forward too, attracting thousands of supporters from both Adelaide and the EP. The game aims to boost the local economy, supporting local businesses and specifically those that support the Teakle Cup. The EP has a rich history of producing talented footballers who continue to or have previously played SANFL and AFL football. Current Norwood players to have done so include Lochlan Charlton, Nick Pedro, Tristan Binder, Henry Nelligan, Jacob Kennerley, Ben Jarvis and Cameron Taheny. Giving these players the opportunity to play on the EP, in front of their family and friends is not only exciting for them, but also the community.
Current Redlegs player Nick Pedro said he is grateful in the number of local businesses who have shown their generosity to assist in getting the game played on the EP.
“It will mean a lot to put on the Norwood jumper back on the EP, where I played most of my junior football for the Tasman Football Club, said Pedro.”
“It’s great to see the support shown from local businesses and the EP community and am looking forward to coming back to Port Lincoln and playing for the Teakle Cup in front of friends and family.”
Current Redlegs player Cam Taheny said the opportunity to wear the red and blue in front of family and friends in Round four will be a special feeling.
“It’s going to be pretty special to run out in the Norwood jumper representing all those on the EP who helped me along the journey,” said Taheny.
“To play in front of family and friends on the EP for the Teakle Cup will be a very special moment, a big thanks to Peter Teakle Wines for their support in making this happen”.
Henry Nelligan who grew up playing for Cummins Kapinnie Cougars said he truly appreciative of the support from the local businesses in EP region.
“It means a lot to be able to play in front of my friends and family and to have the support of the local businesses, particularly Peter Teakle Wines and their continuous generosity, makes this all possible”.
Many other EP based businesses have also thrown their support behind the game, including Bendigo Bank Pt Lincoln, Peter Kittle Toyota Port Lincoln, McDonalds Port Lincoln, Letcher Moroney Accountants and Mellor Olsson Lawyers.
Cam Taheny continued by thanking all the local EP businesses who have committed in each way possible to bring the game we love to the EP.
“A big thank you to all of the local EP businesses who have made it possible for the match to go ahead and help bring a real sense of anticipation and excitement to the EP community,” said Taheny.
“Many of the match partners also sponsor local grassroots football which assists in us EP boys gaining the opportunity to play in Adelaide.”
The Port Lincoln Council have also contributed to the match, noting the positive impact it will have on the local community. Pt Lincoln Mayor Brad Flaherty said that the council had been discussing with Norwood, the SANFL and the local leagues for some time the prospect of securing a match in Port Lincoln. ‘We’re excited to be able to support this initiative by allocating 10k towards sponsorship and helping bring the Norwood FC to Port Lincoln. It’s really pleasing to see local businesses jump on board and support this event, including significant support from Peter Teakle Wines and others helping make the match an annual event on the local sporting calendar for at least the next 3 years.”
“This is a great opportunity for Eyre Peninsula locals to see a high standard of Aussie Rules footy being played right here in Port Lincoln and also featuring some great home-grown talent.”
Norwood’s Commercial Operations Manager Dale Fleming added that the anticipation of this being a year-to-year proposition is exciting in growing the game of football outside of Adelaide, allowing those supporters in the EP region the chance to be put on the football landscape by hosting a game of football between two clubs with rich histories and plenty of success.
“There are so many great things about the Teakle Cup for both The Norwood Football Club and Eyre Peninsula communities,” said Fleming.
“It will be exciting to see this fantastic initiative grow from year to year, and we are very grateful to all of our partners for supporting this game and our footy pathways.”
