Brian Sawley’s father and two uncles had already played football for the Norwood Football Club before he made his league debut in 1954. His father Frank played 26 games in the early 30’s, Gordon 53 games (1937-41) and Albert “Pongo” Sawley, 110 games (1935-46). Both his uncles had also played in the Victorian Football League.
Brian first came into prominence as a state representative in the 1951 Australian Schoolboys Carnival, held in Melbourne. Then in 1953 he went to Mount Gambier with the State Junior Colts.
