Educated at Prince Alfred College, Doug Smart was originally from Melrose in South Australia’s Mid-North.He made his senior debut with North Adelaide in 1986, and played 45 games between 1986 and 1989. He was drafted by Carlton at the end of 1986, but chose to continue playing in the SANFL. His last game for the Roosters was in the 1989 losing Grand Final against Port Adelaide.
Smart transferred to Norwood for the start of the 1990 season, at the same time as team-mate, and Roosters legend, Andrew Jarman.
