James Wasley grew up in Tea Tree Gully and played his early football for his local club. He played six games for the Norwood under 17 team in 1994 and 21 in 1995 when he was runner-up in the best and fairest. Wasley progressed to the reserves, playing 16 games in 1996. He represented South Australia at under 18 level in 1996/1997.
Wasley made his league debut in the opening round of 1997 and played eight senior games and nine reserves in Norwood’s league premiership year. “Wazza” made a big impression in his first season, and his blistering speed soon earned him another nickname – “Flying Machine”.
