Philip Gallagher receives Honour

The Norwood Football Club would like to Congratulate and acknowledge Philip Gallagher’s recent recognition of life membership of the AFL.

A current Norwood and SANFL Hall of Famer, four-time Norwood Premiership player, and a member of the Norwood Football Clubs Team of the Century, Philip Gallagher has been awarded Life Membership by the AFL in further recognition of his contribution to football.

Philip is well regarded and recognised as being an elite player of the SANFL competition, and one of the Norwood Football Club all-time greats. His record as a player epitomises his love and commitment for not only the Norwood Football Club but football in South Australia.

Gallaghers CV is quite noteworthy. He featured for Norwood 292 times kicking 216 goals in the process. He was an integral part of Norwood’s success which culminated in four Premierships in 1975, 1978, 1982 and 1984. A leader in his own right, Gallagher captained the club in 1981 and 1982 which saw him awarded Life Membership in that year also.

Highly skilled by hand and foot, elusive and cool in a crisis, “Gags” made running backwards at top pace look easy. Whilst most of his games were as a wingman, he was just as comfortable in the pivot. The four-time premiership player was named on a wing in Norwood’s official Team of the Century and was an inaugural member of Norwood’s Hall of Fame in 2006, Gallagher was inducted into the South Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2014.

After retiring as a player Gallagher maintained his enthusiasm for the game off the field and has forged an outstanding record as an administrator of the game. His roles have included NFC Match Committee Selector, Board member, Chairman, League Director and SANFL Commissioner/SA Football Commission Deputy Chairman.

Gallagher is still and will always be a prominent figure at The Parade and the Norwood Football Club and we would like to congratulate Philip and his family on being recognised as an AFL life member.
