SANFLW – Legs defeat Dogs for first win of 2022

After a less than ideal start to the season in Round one, the girls responded in great fashion with a solid 19-point win over Central Districts.

From the first bounce it was evident that the girls had come to play, intensity and work rate was high, and the game was predominantly played in our front half. The midfield was on top, our defence was repelling all of Centrals forward thrusts to give our forwards plenty of looks at goal. Even though we didn’t capitalise on the repeat forward entries we still managed two majors to have a handy 14-point lead at the first break.

Second quarter was much the same as the first except the work rate lifted even higher, the midfielders were relentless, led by Jade Halfpenny who was everywhere racking up the possessions with ease. Our outside run and spread was super impressive. Centrals could not penetrate half forward and were kept scoreless for the half which saw the girls take in a handy 30-point lead at half time.

Shortly after the main break Centrals took control of the game with an increased level of work rate that took us some time to adjust to. Their midfield got on top which saw them outscore us four goals to one and came within striking distance at three quarter time.

Taking an 11-point lead into the last quarter the girls were challenged to lift and respond to the Centrals challenge. They were up to the fight and responded well finishing off with a two goal to one final term to run out victors by 19-points. Although not being able to string four quarters of football together, it was a positive step forward and great to get our first win on the board.
