Teams U18 & U16 Round 2

Norwood’s U18 side will be hoping to start the season with back to back victories when they head to Richmond Oval on Saturday to take on West Adelaide.

The Redlegs were on top for most of their Round 1 win over South Adelaide, aside from a lapse in the second and third quarters where the Panthers kicked four goals on the run.

Norwood’s fitness came to the fore and overran South with the last seven goals of the game and went on to claim the Round 1 win, 14.11-95 to 10.10-70 in hot conditions at Norwood Oval.

“I was incredibly proud of our boys for the manner in which the got the win,” Norwood U18 coach Alex Newell said.

“To have control of the game, then lose control due to a South Adelaide response and be able to self correct ourselves to get back to what we do best, in extremely trying and testing conditions is a testament to our conditioning, grit and brand.”

Norwood go into Round 2 with a settled lineup, and take on the Bloods who are also coming off a Round 1 win against North Adelaide, 12.12-84 to 8.7-55.

Westies led by seven points at quarter time, but ran away from the Roosters with a six-goal second quarter.

“Only the one forced change this week (Levi Johnston comes in for Mac Seal), we are backing in the group to continue to grow, develop and ultimately perform,” Newell said.

“We are looking forward to getting another opportunity to showcase how we want to play at Richmond this weekend. It’s going to be an excellent contest, Westies had a strong win and played a strong brand of football Round 1, so we are going to need to be at our absolute best to start the season 2-0.”

Norwood’s U16s get their season underway on Saturday, following a League-wide Bye in Round 1, in what will be Peter Turner’s first game as U16 coach.
