The King announces his retirement

Norwood veteran Matthew Panos played his last 150th and last SANFL match in the 2024 Grand Final.

The 33-year-old announced his retirement to the playing group in the week leading up to the Grand Final.

Despite the result in the 2024 decider, bowing out in a Grand Final was a fitting end to a storied career at the Redlegs, that included two SANFL Premierships and a Jack Oatey Medal.

Dubbed “The King”, Panos had an uncanny ability to stand up when it really mattered, claiming the 2014 Jack Oatey Medal in his first Premiership, and kicking the winning goal in the 2022 Grand Final to steer his Redlegs to a one point win.

The Grand Final was just his fifth SANFL match in 2024, after suffering a knee injury in Round 4 against Port Adelaide at Alberton Oval, which left him stranded on 149 SANFL matches.

Panos concludes his career with 150 SANFL games, 175 goals, two-time Premiership Player, Jack Oatey Medallist, three-time Advertiser Team of the Year Member, State representative, Norwood Best and Fairest and Norwood Captain.

The club thanks Panos for his incredible contribution to Norwood across such a long period of time, making his SANFL debut in 2009.

He was then drafted to the Western Bulldogs with Pick 48 in the 2009 Draft. After three seasons with the Bulldogs, Panos returned to Norwood in 2013 and went on to have an outstanding career in red and blue.
