Norwood’s U18s are back on the winners’ list, upsetting the second placed Woodville-West Torrens by three points in a thriller at Norwood Oval on Saturday.
Welcoming back four players who recently won the AFL U18 Boys Championships for South Australia, Jim Kelly, Balyn O’Brien, Sam Ainsworth and Noah Daw, the Redlegs fielded a strong outfit and went on to claim a 13.10-88 to 13.7-85 win.
Ruckman James van Wyk booted six goals from 21 disposals, whilst also winning 17 hitouts and six clearances. Thomas Neal kicked three goals from five disposals.
Kelly was the leading disposal winner on the ground, with 31 touches, four clearances and three tackles. Micah Kretschmer had 29 disposals, while Daw had 21 and Ainsworth 18.
Norwood started strongly, kicking four goals in the opening term, while the Eagles sprayed the ball around, booting 1.5 to trail the home side by 15 points at the first break.
The Redlegs kicked four of the first five goals of the second quarter, getting out to a match-high 34-point lead.
From there, the Eagles clicked into gear, kicking two quick goals before half time which led to 10 of the next 11 goals to turn the 34-point deficit into a 17-point lead just before three quarter time.
Norwood responded this time with a goal to van Wyk, his fourth, to make it an 11-point Eagles lead at the final break.
Neal goaled in the opening minute of the final quarter to trim the margin to five, and van Wyk proved too strong again soon after to put the Redlegs in front.
Jevan Phillipou returned the Eagles to the lead with five minutes to go, before the man of the hour van Wyk stood up again with his sixth at the 22-minute mark to give the Redlegs the lead and eventual victory.

Norwood’s U16s have landed back to back wins, defeating Woodville-West Torrens by 52 points at Norwood Oval on Saturday.
The Redlegs started strongly and never looked back, running out 15.13-103 to 8.3-51 winners and are now knocking on the door of the top four.
Norwood kicked four goals in the first and second terms, setting up a strong 28-point lead at the main break.
The home side kicked another seven goals to four after half time to take the margin out 50 points in the final term.
Joseph Nak was Norwood’s best with 28 disposals and two goals.
Mason Tambe also had 28 touches, while Owen Couzner kicked three goals from 15 disposals.
Norwood has a tough task in Round 14, hosting the top side in Central District at Norwood Oval on Friday night.
