Coming off a solid victory in Round two against Central District, the challenge was set down for the girls to make it two in a row and gain some momentum early in the season. Coming up against a team that has vastly improved from last year, we knew we had to be at our best to get the job done.
A fast, physical start was the aim and we achieved exactly that, kicking into a strong wind in the first term. The girls were up for the fight. Our work rate around the ball was super and our defence held strong. Whilst we didn’t get a major on the board, we held the Eagles goalless in what was arguably a three-goal breeze.
Heading into the second quarter, the game plan changed to take full effect of the wind, our work rate and pressure lifted a notch. Even though the Eagles managed to sneak a major through in the early stages, we were able to counter and set the game up nicely with three of our own to take a handy 11-point lead into halftime.
The challenge was set again in the third to defend into the breeze, the Eagles had plenty of forward thrusts but were inaccurate with their shots on goal. Our hard work and team defence was rewarded with a nice play going forward that finished in the hands of Alana Lishmund who threaded through a very hand goal. 15 points up at the final change, the work wasn’t done but the stage was set for a big last quarter.
Led by our young brigade of Jade Halfpenny, Sachi Syme and Lana Schwerdt through the midfield along with the experience of Sophie Armitstead, Ali Ferrall and Nicola Burns, the last quarter turned out to be a tough one. A lot of repeat stoppages and physical contests, the girls fought it out very well. Although it was a goalless last term, the Eagles managed to score one, but it wasn’t enough as we recorded an eight-point victory in a very solid four-quarter performance.
