SANFLW – Eagles defeat Lady Legs

After two solid victories over the past fortnight, the momentum was clearly in our favour and the expectations were high going into this week’s game.

It started out as a real arm wrestle early, where goals were hard to find. On numerous occasions, the girls pressed forward but could not find a score. The Eagles were able to gain the upper hand midway through the quarter resulting in a goal with another to follow in the last minute that had us on the back foot.

The start of the second term was much more promising, with two shots on goal early registering only minor scores but the momentum had changed due to a greater work rate. The Eagles did sneak one through that was quickly answered, with another minor score to follow. Opportunities were presented but we were unable to capitalise. Another leaked goal late in the term to the Eagles had us trailing at the main break by 18-points.

A goal within 20 seconds to the Eagles after the break left the Lady Legs with plenty to do, a quick response from Steph Simmonds was exactly what was needed, two opportunities went begging shortly after, which could’ve seen the scoreline reduced to keep the girls in touch only to have one scored against shortly after. Momentum had swung again back in the Lady Legs favour with two more very gettable opportunities lost and only minor scores being registered.

Four goals down going into the last, it was a big task ahead, an even bigger one after the Eagles slotted a major through within the first two minutes. The girls fought it out in what became a rather scrappy final term. A nice goal on the run to Skipper Ali Ferrall reduced the deficit halfway through the term, soon thereafter, to cap off an already ordinary day out Ali suffered a season-ending injury that compounded our woes. It was a game where we hoped to extend our winning streak and firm up our finals hopes but instead leave us with work to do in the coming weeks to make it a certainty.

Solid performances once again by Tesharna Maher and Ali Ferrall who were well supported by Amelia Rusden, Jiarna Zerella and Charlotte Nenke, each of which had a very good day out.
