Joseph’s Journal #2

After a long off season football is finally back!

We find ourselves on the eve of Round three with our Lady Legs having already recorded back to back wins. The girls started with a tough opening match against North which they overcame by eight points at City Mazda Stadium a fortnight ago. Unfortunately, although we got the result we were after we lost our Captain Rebekka McMahon to a serious leg injury. Bek will be out for the remainder of the 2019 season; however we look forward to seeing her back fully fit for season 2020! Our girls then hosted the reigning Premiers South in the 2018 Grand Final rematch on Friday night. In what was a pretty physical battle our girls came home 12-point winners which cemented our first ever win against the Panthers. Next up, the Lady Legs host Sturt FC in Round 4 at Coopers Stadium this Friday night at 7:45pm.

Our men have formally announced their Leadership Group for the 2019 season. Jace Bode will captain Norwood for a third straight season as part of an eight-man leadership group. Important midfielder Matthew Panos was named vice captain after becoming one of the Redlegs’ on-field generals over the past three seasons. Two time Magarey Medallist Mitch Grigg and veteran defender Alex Georgiou were included in the group again, while Mitch Wilkins also included for the first time. Tall forward Brady Dawe will continue again, as will Ed Smart and the ever versatile Cameron Shenton. The Leadership Group itself is very similar to 2018 despite the addition of Mitch Wilkins was who fills the void left by 2013 Premiership Player, Matthew Fuller. We congratulate those men and wish them all the best for the 2019 season! To read more about the Leadership Group, click here.

On the track there is a bit of injury news as we head into trials. Michael Talia has an on-going back issue and is approximately three weeks away from resuming full training. Lewis Johnston suffered a calf injury and will be ruled out for the next couple of weeks, while Luke Surman’s foot injury is progressing well with the forward only likely to miss one more week of training.

The iconic Wally Miller gates located on Woods Street at Coopers Stadium.

Another feature within Joseph’s Journal will be a series of modern day photos captured around Coopers Stadium. The first picture taken is of the iconic Wally Miller Gates (shown above). With the sale of the Redlegs Club, the Wally Miller Gates, which were erected in 1995 and opened across the eastern end of Florence Street, were dismantled and placed in storage. The ornate wrought iron gates were slightly modified and positioned at the Woods St entrance near the RSL clubrooms.

Following our latest Annual General Meeting we would like to congratulate Ground Manager Barry Solomon and former club steward George Phillips on being awarded Life Membership of the Norwood Football Club. Both individuals have dedicated a lot of their own time to the football club so it was only fitting that both men were awarded as Life Members.

The 2019 season isn’t too far away now so those who haven’t yet, please make sure you grab your membership! A big thankyou to those who have already done so, we can’t wait to see all of you cheering on the boys this season!

I hope you have a fantastic week!
