SANFL Teams: The Teakle Cup

Norwood heads over to it’s regional zone of Port Lincoln to take on West Adelaide in The Teakle Cup on Saturday, April 20. 

The game will kick off from 2:10pm at Centenary Oval. The Reserves will take on West Adelaide at Richmond Oval on Friday night.

The Redlegs will be hoping to keep its unbeaten streak alive in 2024, following impressive wins over grand finalists Sturt and Glenelg in the opening two rounds of the season.

Connor McLean, Ethan Warburton and Jayden Gale come into the extended 25-man squad.

Local Eyre Peninsula boys co-captain Jacob Kennerley and Henry Nelligan were excited by the chance to play in their home region.

Cummins Ramblers junior Kennerley said it was an exciting prospect to play in Port Lincoln.

“It’s an exciting time of the year for me and Henry,” he said.

“It’s super special and a great opportunity that’s been brought about by the club and SANFL to get over there and play.

“Most of the local teams aren’t playing this week so they can come down and watch us.”

Kennerley came through the junior ranks at Norwood after heading to Adelaide for school.

“My home town of Cummins is an eight-hour drive away from Adelaide,” he said.

“There were a lot of long bus trips for camps, trainings and carnivals so they are the commitments that people make over there.

“Footy is everything over there, everyone gets together to play and is a massive part of the EP.”

Kennerley was happy with his side’s unbeaten start to the season, and was looking forward to taking on West Adelaide on Saturday.

“Westies are an up-and-coming young team that have challenged us recently,” he said.

“We have to be on our game and stick to our processes to get the win.

“We have had a couple of good wins, but that can fall apart if we aren’t in the right mindset this weekend, and future matches.”

Cummins Kapinnie junior Nelligan was also looking forward to returning to the Eyre Peninsula this week.

“It’s special and really good to get back and play in front of family and the extended community, which have played a great part in shaping our careers,” he said.

“Playing at Centenary Oval, it’s a great ground and played there a lot so am excited to get back there.”
